Taylor Swift is taking the lead in nominations for the Billboard Music Awards. With a total of 20 nominations, she’s ahead of SZA and Morgan Wallen, who have each 17 nominations across 16 categories.
Swift already holds the record as the highest-winning female BBMA recipient of all time with 29 wins, according to Billboard. She could surpass Drake, who has 34 BBMAs and is a finalist for 14 more this year, to become the top overall recipient.
She’ll need at least 5 wins (or possibly more if Drake is successful in some of his categories) to break the record. The 33-year-old superstar is nominated in categories like Top Female Artst, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album (Midnights) and more.
Unlike previous years, the 2023 BBMAs will not have a traditional broadcast component. Instead, the awards and performances will be presented on social channels for Billboard and the BBMAs starting Nov. 6. The results will be revealed on Nov. 19.
The winners are determined based on year-end performance metrics on the Billboard charts from Nov. 19, 2022 to Oct. 21, 2023 (which corresponds to the tracking period of Nov. 4, 2022 through Oct. 12, 2023).
“The 2023 BBMAs will deliver a fresh awards show concept that will entertain fans with music and exclusive content, including winner celebrations, behind-the-scenes moments and performances created by the world’s biggest artists,” Billboard’s Paul Grein writes. “Performances and awards will roll out across the BBMAs and Billboard social channels, as well as via BBMAs.watch on Sunday, Nov. 19. Billboard Music Awards performers will be revealed daily on BBMAs social channels, starting Monday, Nov. 6.”
Other notable nominations include The Weeknd (16); Drake and Zach Bryan (14 each); Luke Combs (10); 21 Savage, Metro Boomin and Miley Cyrus (nine each); Beyoncé and Rema (seven each); Bad Bunny and Peso Pluma (six each); and Ariana Grande, David Guetta, Eslabon Armado, Karol G, NewJeans and Selena Gomez (with five each).
The award show introduced nine new awards this year, including 4 in K-pop (Top Global K-pop Artist, Top K-pop Tour, Top K-pop Album and Top Global K-pop Song) and two in Afrobeats (Top Afrobeats Artist and Top Afrobeats Song).
The 2023 Billboard Music Awards will be produced by Dick Clark Productions.
