Topline
The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Wednesday its shortlist for Oscars nominations for 10 categories—amid the prominent snubs wereTaylor Swift, the well-liked documentary about the Mars rover “Good Night Oppy,” and actor Robert Downy Jr.’s documentary about his father— while paving the way for Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to be nominated in several categories.
Key Facts
Taylor Swift’s short film for the 10-minute version of her song “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version) was not nominated in the Live Action Short Film category—Swift had presented the film at several major film festivals, and was recently included in Variety’s Directors On Directors series, leading some to believe she may be nominated (Kendrick Lamar’s short film We Cry Together, which featured Taylour Paige, also didn’t make the list).
Swift still made the short list for Music (Original Song) for “Carolina” from Where The Crawdads Sing, as did Rihanna for “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Selena Gomez for “My Mind & Me” for her documentary of the same name, Lady Gaga for “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick and The Weeknd for “Nothing is Lost (You Give Me Strength)” from Avatar: The Way Of Water, among others.
Robert Downey Jr. ‘s documentary about his father, Sr., did not make the short list, and Mars rover documentary Good Night Oppy was also snubbed.
Wakanda Forever was shortlisted in five categories, making it a steady contender for nominations.
As expected, Avatar: The Way Of Water was shortlisted in the Visual Effects category, though Everything Everywhere All At Once was not.
What To Watch For
Oscars nominations will be announced on January 24, and winners will be announced on March 12 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
