This week, Taylor Swift adds another radio hit to her discography with the debut of her song “All the Girls You Loved Before” on the newly-updated Pop Airplay chart.
The track opens at No. 37, which is not a particularly high starting point, but what makes this achievement even more impressive is that Swift’s other current smash hit, “Lavender Haze,” currently sits at No. 6 on the same chart. This means that the singer-songwriter fills two spaces on one of the most competitive tallies compiled by Billboard.
These days, it is not uncommon for some of the biggest stars in music to occupy several spaces on important Billboard charts such as the Hot 100 or the Billboard 200. However, radio charts work differently, and it is unusual to see one name appear more than once in a single frame. Based on how these rankings are compiled, it makes sense that some of the top acts would fill plenty of spots, especially when they have a new album arrive, but this is not the case for radio charts.
Swift’s “All the Girls You Loved Before” was released recently as a surprise for fans at the beginning of her The Eras Tour. Her hundreds of millions of supporters reacted by purchasing the song in huge numbers, and it quickly reached a handful of Billboard charts, debuting at No. 12 on the Hot 100, narrowly missing out on becoming another top 10 hit for the star.
The song was written and recorded during her Lover era, but it was never released. Now, it serves as something of a standalone single, but it is not clear what Swift intends to do with it. Despite its success, Swift likely does not want to undercut the current trajectory of “Lavender Haze,” which is still going strong on a number of lists.
Impressively, despite the fact that she has another tune that ranks much higher, “All the Girls You Loved Before” still earns the loftiest debut of the week on the Pop Airplay chart. The song comes in two spaces ahead of Pink’s “Trustfall” and is several spots above Nicki Minaj’s “Red Ruby Da Sleeze,” which starts in last place on the 40-spot tally.
