Last night (August 28) was a very good evening for Taylor Swift, and it looks like it’s just the beginning of what may be a fall full of wins for the singer-songwriter.
At the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, Swift’s All Too Well: The Short Film was named Video of the Year. As the chart-topper gave her acceptance speech, she thanked everyone and ended the night with a major announcement. “I had sort of made up my mind that, if you were going to be this generous and give us this,” Swift began, “I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album comes out October 21.”
The crowd went wild, and in an instant, Swift, her win, and her just-announced project were trending online as well. Midnights will mark Swift’s first album of entirely new material since Evermore, which was released in December 2020 without much warning. The set will be her tenth traditional studio album, and so far, not much more is known about the effort other than its title, release date, and a general statement regarding what it’s about.
On Instagram, Swift describes the album’s focus as being about “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life,” though what exactly that will sound like isn’t yet clear.
For the past year and a half, Swift has been more focused on re-recording her first six albums in an effort to regain control over the material, the rights to which have been sold more than once (and never to her). Since she began the ongoing project, both Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) have gone to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced a number of charting hits. The latter of the two featured the 10-minute version of “All Too Well,” which then soundtracked her award-winning music video.
Swift made history as she was named the top winner of the evening, as she became the first artist to collect Video of the Year at the VMAs three times. She previously won for “Bad Blood” with Kendrick Lamar and her own “You Need to Calm Down.” She was also nominated in the top category for her visuals that accompanied singles “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “The Man.”
In addition to claiming Video of the Year, Swift also won Best Longform Video and Best Direction, as she directed the All Too Well: The Short Film herself.
