The telecom industry has been the province of sleepy corporate giants weighed down by lackluster growth and failed deals. Following its merger with Sprint,
T-Mobile US
has a good opportunity to set a new course, with Mike Sievert at the helm.
Sievert, 53, came to T-Mobile in 2012 as chief marketing officer, and helped launch the company’s signature “Un-Carrier” branding and ethos. He rose to chief operating officer in 2015, became president in 2018, and joined the board of directors that same year.
On April 1, 2020—just a few weeks after the world locked down to slow the spread of Covid-19—T-Mobile closed the Sprint deal. Sievert succeeded the magenta-clad, long-haired John Legere as CEO a month later, retaining the same vivacious attitude, but with different hair.
“The Un-Carrier philosophy has been about always putting people first,” says Sievert. “For 40 years, this industry has forced people to choose between a good deal and a good network. T-Mobile is able to give you both.”
Combining the two companies is a tall task, with more than 100 million subscribers, disparate nationwide networks, and differing corporate cultures—all in the midst of an industrywide upgrade to next-generation 5G technology.
For customers, T-Mobile has begun to deliver better service at lower prices than competitors
AT&T
and
Verizon Communications
.
For shareholders, tens of billions of dollars of stock buybacks could be on the way.
