After years of anticipation from fans, SZA has finally landed her first No. 1 hit on the Hot 100. Her song “Kill Bill” has claimed the top spot, but it took a very long time for the tune to climb to the summit.
Billboard points out that “Kill Bill” had to spend eight nonconsecutive frames in the runner-up spot before finally hitting No. 1. This unusual path to the peak position on the Hot 100 has helped the R&B star make an odd bit of Billboard chart history.
Usually, a song will either make it to the top of the charts faster than eight weeks (if it’s already that close), or remain stuck at a No. 2 high indefinitely. But in this case, “Kill Bill” spent a significant amount of time as the runner-up before finally claiming the throne.
“Kill Bill” is now tied with three other tracks for the second-most weeks spent at No. 2 before hitting No. 1 on the Hot 100. SZA’s smash hit is in some interesting and exciting company, as the other singles that have languished for just as long in second place before climbing to the peak include The Weeknd and Daft Punk’s “Starboy,” Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” and OutKast and Sleepy Brown’s “The Way You Move.”
There is only one single that has managed to spend more time at No. 2 and then work its way to No. 1. That tune is Billie Eilish’s breakout smash “Bad Guy,” which racked up a total of nine weeks waiting in the wings before a Justin Bieber remix helped it soar to the top. “Bad Guy” remains Eilish’s only Hot 100 leader, and when it topped the list, Bieber was not officially credited, although he did help.
