I figured that Sweet Magnolias was not long for this world when I saw two powerhouse releases on deck for this weekend on Netflix, and sure enough, both of them have passed the show on the Top 10 list, causing it to lose the number one spot its held for almost a week.
Sweet Magnolias is now #3, passed by Inventing Anna, the new #1, and the second season of Love is Blind, which is #2, and has debuted five of its new episodes, with more to come next Friday, as is how Netflix usually handles its reality programming, which is less formatted for binging than scripted productions.
Seeing Inventing Anna on top here is no surprise. The show stars Julia Garner from Ozark, instantly recognizable to any Netflix fan. She’s playing real-life scam artist Anna Delvey, who infiltrated New York elite society, and the entire production is from Shonda Rhimes as part of her massive overall deal with Netflix that lured her away from ABC. That’s a powerful combination, and it’s no wonder the show is doing so well.
Well, doing well in terms of viewership anyway. The series is not reviewing well both among critics and fans. It has a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty low on the TV scale there, and has an absolutely dismal 23% audience score, one of the lowest I can even remember seeing for a major series. It’s faring a little better on IMDB with a 6.6/10, though that’s not exactly amazing either. My guess is that people are hearing Julia Garner’s accent and turning it off immediately, but it’s not Garner’s fault! That’s actually how she talked!
As for Sweet Magnolias, this seems like a show that will probably exist on Netflix in perpetuity, given that it’s low cost and has a lot of book-based source material it can cover. It’s certainly far from one of Netflix’s flashiest, most prominent shows, but it performs well, particularly in the US, and I would not be surprised to see it return for season 3 after spending time at number one here.
If people hate Inventing Anna as much as they claim to, we could see Love is Blind scoop up the number one spot in the next few days here. It’s one of Netflix’s higher profile reality shows where couples must propose only talk to, never seeing the other person, and then figure out how to make things work in person. 80% of the time it’s a disaster, and this season appears to be no different after five episodes.
More changes to come, and we’ll see what’s on top in a few days here.
