Topline
Susan Rice, longtime Democratic advisor in both former President Barack Obama’s and President Joe Biden’s administrations, is leaving her White House role as domestic policy advisor, Biden announced Monday.
Key Facts
Rice, who began serving as Biden’s chief domestic advisor when he entered office, confirmed the news Monday, thanking Biden “for trusting and empowering” her to serve in the role.
In a statement announcing her departure, Biden credited Rice with helping the administration expand and strengthen the Affordable Care Act, make college more affordable and increase access to high quality child care.
Rice’s last day in the Biden administration will be May 26, a senior administration official told NBC News.
Key Background
Before taking on this role, Rice’s experience was mainly in foreign policy. She previously served as National Security Advisor and United Nations Ambassador under Obama. When Biden appointed her to this role, she became the first person to serve as both national security advisor and domestic policy advisor. Among the major tasks during her tenure as Biden’s domestic policy chief, Rice oversaw the administration’s reversal of Title 42, a pandemic immigration restriction, implemented during former President Donald Trump’s time in office.
Surprising Fact
Rice was reportedly a contender to be Biden’s vice presidential running mate in 2020.
What We Don’t Know
It’s unclear who will replace Rice and oversee Biden’s domestic policy leading up to his reelection campaign, which he’s expected to announce this week, according to the Washington Post.
