Superman (2025)

I wasn’t a big fan of James Gunn’s Superman, but I’m still glad the movie performed relatively well at the box office. It wasn’t quite the smash hit DC and Warner Bros. needed, but it wasn’t a flop, either, earning $611 worldwide. (You can read my review here).
It was a big enough hit that the film’s sequel, Superman: Man Of Tomorrow, already has a release date and it’s almost exactly two years after the first film hit theaters. Man Of Tomorrow is slated for a July 9th, 2027 debut which is honestly surpising. I wasn’t expecting another movie featuring David Corenswet’s Man Of Steel until at least 2028.
The two year gap is a nice change of pace for DC. The Batman II isn’t coming out until October 1st, 2027 which is over five years since The Batman hit theaters. That’s way too long between films. Two other DCU films will release between the two Superman movies. James Watkins’s Clayface comes out in 2026 as well as Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, who made her peculiar debut in Superman.
A few thoughts:
I don’t like the title. Superman: Man Of Tomorrow makes you say the word “man” twice in a row, which is awkward. Just call it Man Of Tomorrow. Trust me, DC. Everyone will know it’s a Superman movie.
I hope that Superman himself is a bit more mature this time around, and less of a gloomy, emo superhero. He spent a lot of the movie being argumentative, emotional and getting beat up. I’d much rather see a return to Christopher Reeves’ take on Superman, and I think Corenswet could pull it off just fine.
I wish Gunn would take a step back and just produce these films. He’s returning to write and direct Man Of Tomorrow and I just really don’t think his particular brand of humor and direction fits with Superman well at all. He’s perfect for Peacemaker, but all wrong for Supe.
It looks like Lex Luthor – now in his big green power suit – returns for Man Of Tomorrow. What I’m less certain about is whether this image suggests the pair teams up this time around. They look awfully chummy here. Maybe they’ll team up against Brainiac or some other supervillain.
Speaking of Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult posted a slightly different image of the pair on Instagram (and also just called it Man Of Tomorrow):

This suggests that Superman and Lex Luthor do fight one another in the upcoming film, but then are forced to team up against a greater threat. Frenemies, perhaps.
David Corenswet posted a third image on his Instagram, also calling the film Man Of Tomorrow:

Hopefully the next film is a step up in quality from this year’s messy script. At least we won’t have too long to wait to find out!
