Despite all the drama surrounding Henry Cavill returning, then not returning as Superman after James Gunn took over and looks to recast a new, younger version of the character, DC has had an onscreen Superman for years now.
That would be Tyler Hoechlin’s wholesome, family man version seen on Superman and Lois, which began as a CW Arrowverse series, complete with crossovers, but eventually extracted itself from that corner of the universe with some hand-waving “multiverse” talk to become its own thing.
Now, the show’s fate seems up in the air as the DCEU and Arrowverse die, and the James Gunn era begins, along with the expansion of “Elseworlds” projects like Joker 2 and the Robert Pattinson Batman universe expanding with another movie and an HBO Max show.
A new report from THR detailing how The CW is starting to fall apart at the seams indicates that of the two remaining DC shows on the network, The CW will likely cancel one and keep one. The idea is that Superman and Lois, an expensive production, may be cancelled while they may keep Gotham Knights, a somewhat bizarre, very much CW-looking teen drama about Batman’s son in a Gotham with a dead Batman. No, it’s not Damian Wayne, it’s some other guy named Turner they made up completely for this show.
However, the idea is that it’s possible that HBO Max, where you can already watch the show, may instead pick up Superman and Lois and add it to its DC roster filled with Gunn projects and The Batman’s Penguin series. It would not share a universe with any of these, and therefore by definition, be its own Elseworlds project. Given that Gunn does not seem to mind if Pattinson’s Batman continues to exist even as his new DC Universe will get its own Batman, I don’t think that he’d care about Hoechlin Superman sticking around for a couple more years of Superman and Lois. I mean, the show may even come to a natural ending by the time his Superman Legacy movie is even released in mid 2025.
Superman and Lois has always been an odd endeavor. It feels very much elevated from all other CW Arrowverse shows, with not just a bigger budget, but better filming, acting and writing. It’s certainly far from perfect, but Hoechlin’s Superman especially has been a low-key incredible performance and brilliant representation of the character. Cavill had the looks, of course, but we are far from the dark and broody Snyderverse here and back to the core of who Superman was supposed to be.
My guess is that HBO Max does in fact save Superman and Lois, The CW takes Gotham Knights and that show ends up being quite bad (it looks very, very bad). I have no idea what The CW is really doing at this point with its mass cancellations and random amalgam of series, but I guess we’ll see if it survives the next few years. At this rate, Superman and Lois may outlive it.
