South Korean boy band Stray Kids earns a triumphant return to the Billboard 200 with their latest album, 5-Star. The set debuts at No. 1 on the chart, solidifying its position as the most-consumed release in the United States this week. With nearly a quarter of a million equivalent units sold, it’s arrival also marks one of the largest album starts of 2023 so far.
As they reclaim the top spot on the Billboard 200, Stray Kids also achieve their third top 10 hit on the chart. With this accomplishment, the band now stands among the most successful musical acts from South Korea in the history of the Billboard 200.
Stray Kids now shares the distinction of having three top 10-charters on the Billboard 200 with three other South Korean groups, specifically NCT 127, Seventeen and TXT (also known as Tomorrow X Together).
At the forefront of South Korean artists reaching the top 10 on the Billboard 200, unsurprisingly, is BTS. The seven-member powerhouse band has an impressive track record, having secured seven top 10 albums on the chart. Notably, all but one of these releases soared straight to the peak position on the 200-spot tally.
Sandwiched between BTS and Stray Kids (along with the three other groups they are currently tied with) is Twice, a South Korean girl group. Twice has achieved top 10 success on the Billboard 200 with four different projects, and yet they have yet to claim the No. 1 spot.
Prior to the success of 5-Star, Stray Kids shared the same standing as several other beloved K-pop favorites, each with two top 10 albums. Now, their latest achievement has propelled them ahead of Ateez, Blackpink, and SuperM. Notably, fellow South Korean act Enhypen has also earned their second top 10 hit this week, coinciding with Stray Kids’ appearance.
