At the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, several South Korean groups achieved significant victories, with each contributing to the growing recognition of K-pop in the music industry.
Three South Korean groups secured awards at the ceremony, marking another successful year for K-pop artists. In fact, 2023 may have been the biggest year yet when it comes to representation for artists from the Asian nation. These wins not only celebrate their achievements but also add to the list of K-pop groups that have earned MTV Video Music Awards.
Currently, five K-pop groups have won VMAs over the years. While the awards may not be evenly distributed among these groups, each year brings new opportunities for K-pop artists to shine and expand the list of winners.
Tomorrow X Together (also known as TXT) was one of the two K-pop groups that secured their first VMA in 2023. They won the Push Performance of The Year award for their single “Sugar Rush Ride” and also performed their new single “Back for More” alongside featured artist Anitta. In this category, they outperformed other nominees, including Ice Spice, Jvke, Saucy Santana, and Reneé Rapp.
Stray Kids joined TXT as they claimed their first VMA, winning the Best K-Pop trophy for their single “S-Class.” They performed the song during the show, and the competition they had to best included fellow K-pop superstars Aespa, Blackpink, Fifty Fifty, Seventeen, and Tomorrow X Together.
BTS leads the away among all K-pop acts when it comes to the number of VMAs won. So far, the group, which is on a a break for a while, has earned at least nine trophies themselves. Their videos have actually won more, though the members of the band don’t always get to claim the prizes themselves, depending on the category.
Blackpink earned their third VMA this year, this time in the Group of the Year category. They competed against various K-pop acts, such as Fifty Fifty, NewJeans, Seventeen, and Tomorrow X Together, as well as artists from other music styles, such as the Jonas Brothers, Flo and Maneskin. Blackpink had previously won in categories like Song of Summer and Best Metaverse Performance. Their video “Pink Venom” was awarded Best Choreography this time around, which recognized their choreographers.
Seventeen, another influential South Korean group, secured a VMA in 2022 when they won Push Performance of The Year for their single “Rock With You.” The large boy band topped fellow rising artists like Muni Long, Griff, Gayle and Omar Apollo for the honor.
