Arriving on Netflix on August 5, Carter will be the first major Korean movie from the streaming platform
Directed by Jung Byung-gil, Netflix has shared that Carter is a one-scene, one-cut action film, with physical combat and airplane stunts. Jung is known for making action-heavy films, including The Villainess, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017. He is also set to make his Hollywood debut with Afterburn, with Gerard Butler attached to the project.
Carter tells the story of an agent (named “Carter”) who wakes up with no recollections of his past. This happens two months into a deadly pandemic originating from the DMZ which has devastated the U.S. and North Korea. In Carter’s head is a mysterious device, and in his mouth, a lethal bomb. A strange voice in his ears gives him orders and he learns that the bomb may go off at any time – unless he rescues the girl who is the sole antidote to the virus. However, the CIA and a North Korean coup are hot on his heels. Thrown into a mysterious operation, “Carter” must reclaim his identity and successfully complete his mission on time.
The upcoming months will see other major content releases from Netflix’s Korean slate. This includes action film Seoul Vibe, which is set during the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Seoul Vibe will star Yoo Ah-in, Go Kyung-pyo, Lee Kyu-hyung, Park Ju-hyun and Ong Seong-wu.
Other titles in the pipeline include romantic comedy The Fabulous, as well as The Accidental Narco (working title). The latter series stars Ha Jung-woo, Hwang Jung-min, Jo Woo-jin and Park Hae-soo. The Accidental Narco will be directed by Yoon Jong-bin, who has helmed films like box office hit The Spy Gone North, Kundo: Age of the Rampant, and Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time.
