Squid Game season 3
Well, I wondered if the hyper-popular, record-setting third season of Squid Game would be able to hold on against a weekly behemoth of a program in Netflix’s Top 10 list, but it did not.
Squid Game season 3 has in fact been dethroned by WWE Monday Night RAW. This is not an unusual occurrence every Tuesday after it airs, but this is Squid Game we’re talking about, so it seemed like it may have been able to hold the line.
The rest of the list was shoved down almost in perfect order. The Waterfront is down to #3, The Sandman is down to #4. Without question, Squid Game will be back on top tomorrow, and we’ll see how those others hold.
Top 10
Squid Game is not aiming for a fourth season in the traditional sense, as this arc is over now. You’ll notice I said “this arc,” as there have been prominent stories about creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk thinking about a prequel that takes place with Gi-hun between seasons 1 and 2 as he formulates his plan for revenge. The other widely reported Squid Game series perhaps on the way is an American version brought to life by David Fincher, but Netflix has not officially announced that, despite years of rumors about it.
The Waterfront has not been renewed for season 2 yet, but it’s put up an amazing performance, sticking to Squid Game like glue despite being out almost three weeks ago now. That’s deeply impressive, and I believe there is absolutely no chance that The Waterfront is not renewed for season 2 in the coming days or weeks here. No question.
The controversial Sandman has returned in the wake of the severe accusations against its creator, Neil Gaiman. But he was not directly involved in the show, which was allowed to end on its own terms. A third season was never planned, so there’s no cancellation needed here.
The list has a few other impressive stories, like Ginny and Georgia still hanging on at #7 after all this time, but a fourth season was greenlit way before season 3 even aired, so no need to show off. Mr. Robot, the recently added head-trippy show, has performed decently at #6, but that’s a series that is absolutely not going to be for everyone.
So, I suppose it’s not the biggest shock that Squid Game fell to WWE, but the main question I have is what’s going to come along to knock it down a second time, and what its longer-term viewership is going to be compared to the last two seasons.
