Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s $30 million deal with Spotify yielded no content for the streaming platform in 2021, which has subsequently now led for the service to take matters into “its own hands” and start facilitating productions for the pair.
The first piece of work to come from the duo was a 35-minute long “holiday special” podcast featuring Elton John, Deepak Chopra, Tyler Perry, James Corden and others.
According to U.K. publication The Sun, a source close to the project said: “Spotify has been waiting a long time for some content from Harry and Meghan and now it appears they have finally taken matters into their own hands.
“Hiring a raft of in-house talent on Spotify’s side will ensure they finally squeeze something out of them as they bid to honour their contract.”
Spotify was reportedly expecting content from The Sussexes in 2021 as their company Archewell Audio hired podcast producer, Rebecca Sananes, and stated it was looking forward to sharing more content later in the year.
Eleven companies and a trust have now been added to the pair’s media empire since April 2020 including the audio and visual production arms Archewell Audio and Archewell Productions. All of which are stationed in Delaware, a renowned tax haven. The companies have so far been used to hold trademarks, IP and develop work through.
An advert for a senior producer role at Gimlet Projects, Spotify’s production arm, said: “We’re currently assembling a show team that will build and launch a new original show with Archewell featuring the voices of high profile women.
“The ideal candidate has experience working with high-profile talent, and an interest in the intersection of social activism and popular culture.”
The new show on high profile women is set to be a weekly offering from the pair who presumably signed off on the editorial offering – related to the content – with Spotify.
Archewell Productions, designed to produce programming, are also developing documentaries and a cartoon series in correspondence with another multimillion deal, this time with streaming giant Netflix.
