The Solana-based memecoin launchpad Pump.fun has disabled its livestream feature after facing severe backlash over the weekend. This decision follows a series of violent and harmful livestreams on the platform that went viral on social media.
In a community notice, Pump.fun announced the suspension of the livestream feature while it works on introducing stronger safeguards and infrastructure. The notice stated, “To ensure the absolute safety of our users, we will be pausing the live streaming functionality on the site for an indefinite period until the moderation infrastructure is ready to handle heightened levels of activity.”
Solana’s Pump.fun Faces Backlash over harmful Content
Recently, Beau, a Pudgy Penguins safety project manager and X user, shared a livestream clip showing an individual threatening to commit suicide if their memecoin did not reach a specific market cap. Beau urged the platform to disable the livestream feature entirely, stating that it had become “out of control.”
Other problematic livestream incidents included a user firing gunshots out of a window to “celebrate” a crypto surge and a child threatening family members over a token’s performance. The situation intensified after Pump.fun recorded $14.3 million in revenue on Saturday.
The platform has previously hosted racially insensitive and pornographic coins, which were not subject to content moderation.
Pump.fun’s anonymous founder, Alon, recently addressed the situation, promising to protect users from harmful content. Alon stated, “Let me make it abundantly clear: we actively moderate illicit content on the site, including images, videos, live streams, and comments. Although we strongly stand for free speech and expression, it’s our responsibility to ensure that users don’t see clearly repulsive or dangerous content and that bad actors aren’t given a platform to act as they wish.”
In another post, Alon said that Pump.fun had taken down a broadcast where a user threatened to harm their dog unless a token’s market cap increased. Following this incident, the platform decided to disable livestreams altogether.
Pump.fun’s success has been largely driven by memecoins, which have also contributed significantly to Solana’s revenue. However, several industry veterans have highlighted the downsides of memecoins, particularly their unchecked virality, as the crypto sector aims for a more mainstream and serious approach.
