Sofia Coppola’s ‘Nepo Baby’ Daughter Goes Viral, Outperforms HBO’s ‘The Last Of Us’ Finale

“TikTok is not gonna make me famous, so it doesn’t really matter,” said Romy Mars, in a since-deleted TikTok clip that instantly went viral, racking up more than 46 million views on Twitter, outperforming HBO’s The Last of Us finale (8.2 million views, breaking a viewership record).

Who is Romy Mars?

Mars is the daughter of director Sofia Coppola and musician Thomas Mars, and granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola, who instantly became the internet’s favorite “nepo baby” after her TikTok was hailed as a cinematic masterpiece.

Mars’ TikTok clip confirms every single stereotype about the offspring of the rich and famous; the video sees Mars casually state that she has been “grounded,” because she “tried to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on my dad’s credit card, because I wanted to have dinner with my camp friend.”

Like many Gen Z content creators, Mars comes across as confident and self-aware, unafraid to show her true self, confessing to the camera that she has no idea how to differentiate between an onion and a clove of garlic; she goes on to choose a shallot.

Mars walks the viewer through her attempt to make a vodka sauce pasta, which doesn’t pan out, because she doesn’t have the ingredients. She sends her babysitter’s boyfriend, Ari, on a mission to collect the ingredients and jokingly refers to the couple as her “replacement parents,” because her real parents are “never home.”

“My parents’ biggest rule is, like, I’m not allowed to have any public social media accounts. Here’s why,” Mars says, showing off her father’s Grammy for the 2009 album “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.”

Mars goes on to say that her parents “don’t want me to be a nepotism kid, but TikTok is not gonna make me famous, so it doesn’t matter.”

Wildly successful, absent parents punishing their daughter for an unauthorized helicopter ride sounds like an episode of Succession, while the culinary confusion echoes Kendall Jenner’s pitiful attempt to slice a cucumber.

Nepo babies have become a subject of fascination of late, as the public has grown increasingly aware of how the rich and famous have given their children the opportunity to dominate the entertainment landscape.

Talented nepo babies are still beloved (for example, few would argue that Nicholas Cage, nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, doesn’t deserve his success), but less impressive nepo babies, such as Lily-Rose Depp and Brooklyn Beckham, have been subject to mockery and criticism.

Nepo babies surely have their own problems, but as a whole, the children of celebrities are increasingly viewed as hopelessly out-of-touch, living inside a bubble that bears no resemblance to the lived reality of regular people.

Nepo babies are never going to worry about paying rent; living in the shadow of their parents might be their biggest concern, alongside identifying the vegetables in their kitchen.

It remains to be seen if Romy Mars will continue her career as a TikTok creator (we never got to see what happened with the vodka sauce), but she’s certainly off to a strong start; outperforming HBO’s flagship series on the first post is a legitimately impressive achievement.
