Sinbad is on the road to recovery after suffering a stroke on October 25, 2020. His family posted an update on Instagram at the top of the week, detailing the day-to-day work and struggles of the beloved comedian. Many fans were unaware of the stroke, perhaps because the news broke during the heart of the global Covid-19 pandemic. The comedian’s family thanked fans for their “love and support” over the last two years, but noted that given the various hospitals and therapies, they now are turning to fundraising to help finance the remainder of Sinbad’s recovery.
To that end, they have released a limited edition, collectible Sinbad figure – wearing the comedian’s signature leather chaps – that was made in collaboration with toy designer Miguel Wilson and Rad Retro Power. Per Wilson: “A lot of time & effort went into making this figure the best in class. All proceeds will contribute to Sinbad’s continued journey toward recovery, so help us make history with this iconic, one-of-a-kind limited edition collectible.”
To date, only 40 of the figures were made and they start at $350 per figure. The imagery appears to be from the comedian’s beloved, 1990 “Brain Damaged” show, which originally aired on HBO but now appears to be only available on YouTube.
Sinbad suffered an ischemic stroke, according to the site put up by his family. He was on a ventilator for some time and eventually woke up, but needed intense therapy. The actor has had a remarkable comeback, says the family who adds that the comedian also said this: “I am not done. I will not stop fighting until I can walk across the stage again.” The site leads to a squarespace donation form where anyone can donate money.
Sinbad, born David Adkins, is known for his “clean” standup, and for portraying the role of Coach Walter Oakes in iconic HBCU-centric show A Different World, Andre Krimm in Necessary Roughness, and David Bryan in The Sinbad Show. His more recent appears include one on FX’s Atlanta, the dad on Fox’s Rel, several episodes of The Lion Guard on Disney Jr. and as the voice of Mr. Smiley in cult favorite Steven Universe on the Cartoon Network. Celebrities who checked in on Sinbad’s page include India Arie, D.L. Hughley and Questlove.
