Should Harry Kane Leave Tottenham Hotspur For Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United?

With Manchester United 2-0 up and cruising against Tottenham Hotspur, the visiting fans in North London saw an opportunity to run salt into the wounds. “Harry Kane, we’ll see you in June,” they sang in reference to growing speculation the Spurs striker could be on his way to Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Kane showcased his world-class ability in the second half of the match as he dragged Tottenham to a 2-2 draw, but questions over the 29-year-old’s future. Talks over a contract extension with Spurs have reportedly stalled and Erik Ten Hag is believed to be on keen on attracting Kane to United.

United’s need for a new centre forward is clear. While they have made progress under Ten Hag this season, they lack the attacking focal point to truly challenge for major honours like the Premier

League and Champions League titles. This is where Kane could make a difference as one of the best players in his position anywhere.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are facing a rebuild. They have still to appoint a new permanent manager following the sacking of Antonio Conte and Kane, now 29 and in the peak of his career, might not want to find himself in the middle of another project. He might want to play for a team that is closer to being able to win.

As a team leader, Kane clearly feels some responsibility for pulling Spurs out of their current cycle of despair. “I think it was important [for Levy] to understand where the players’ heads were at in that moment,” said Kane, talking about a meeting with Daniel Levy. “It was an honest conversation of where everyone is at and what we need to try to do to give us the best possible chance to finish the season with something.”

It’s entirely possible Kane could be persuaded to stay at Tottenham should the club make an ambitious managerial appointment and back that new manager to build a new team on the pitch, but he finds himself at a career crossroads. Kane has demonstrated a willingness to consider other options in the past and so he could have his head turned again.

Bayern Munich have also been linked with Kane as they search for the replacement for Robert Lewandowski who left the club for Barcelona last summer. Chelsea could also be in the market for a new centre forward. Kane has a lot of thinking to do. This summer could be his last opportunity to make a move.
