The warning was issued by the Shiba Inu-focused X account “Susbarium,” urging holders of SHIB to remain vigilant and cautious when dealing with unsolicited messages or offers.
This scam primarily uses a tactic known as “smishing,” which involves sending fake SMS messages that appear to come from a trusted service, such as Binance. Victims receive notifications about suspicious activity on their accounts, prompting them to call a provided number for account protection. Since these fraudulent texts mimic legitimate communications, it’s easy for unsuspecting users to be tricked into believing the messages are authentic.
Once the victim calls the scam number, they are advised to transfer their funds to a “safe” wallet controlled by the scammers. The fraudsters often send a fake seed phrase through email, SMS, or even during the phone call, leading the victim to believe their assets are secure. When the transfer is made, the fraudsters quickly drain the wallet, leaving the victim with significant losses.
Susbarium has urged SHIB holders to avoid calling any numbers or sharing personal details from suspicious messages. Users are encouraged to always verify communications through Binance’s official support channels. To combat these types of scams, Binance also announced an upgrade to its security measures, including extending its Anti-Phishing Code to SMS. This allows users to better verify the authenticity of messages with a personalized, recognizable code.
Binance also recommended that users stay informed about potential security threats and activate the latest security features. They stressed the importance of skepticism, advising users to avoid responding to urgent requests for personal information and always verify links or requests by manually visiting official websites.
