Yash Raj Films re-released their hit romantic film from the 90s, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge on November 2 and the film continued to charm audiences even 27 years after it hit theatres in 1995. The Hindi film was re-released in select theatres to mark the 57th birthday of the lead star Shah Rukh Khan. The film is fondly known as DDLJ and collected $28,103 on the day it re-released.
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge was released with subsidized rates of $1.2 and it saw full-house at many theatres where it released across India. PVR Cinemas screened DDLJ in 18 cities including Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh among others on November 2 in India. Cinema chains INOX and Cinepolis also released the 1995 film in select theatres.
Talking about the re-release, the film’s star Khan says in a press statement, “DDLJ has been an extremely special film for me. I am grateful for all the love I have been receiving over the years for the film. Bringing it back on my birthday just makes it more special.”
Vice President – Distribution at Yash Raj Films Rohan Malhotra also says that the film has shaped pop culture and is the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. “It is our biggest IP and it is symbolic to the deep bond that Shah Rukh Khan & Aditya Chopra’s YRF share. SRK is an icon who has graced Indian cinema with path-breaking films and it is our honour to celebrate his birthday and treat his fans to one of his most memorable films of his incredibly successful career.”
Originally released on October 20, 1995, the film shattered box office records and is the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. It has been running in a Mumbai theatre for more than 25 years. In 2020, DDLJ was released in Germany, UAE, Saudi Arabia, USA, UK, Canada, South Africa, Mauritius, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland and Estonia.
Starring Khan alongside Kajol, Amrish Puri and Farida Jalal in important roles, the film traced the story of a non-resident Indian family. Simran (Kajol) lived her entire life as per Indian traditions and rules set by her dad Baldev (Puri) and after completing college, she convinces him to allow her on a trip to Europe with her friends where she meets Raj (Khan) and falls in love with him. The film traces the journey that Simran and Raj undertake to convince her family to agree with their union despite their orthodox thoughts. The film struck a chord with the audience and continues to charm them.
