Topline
Sexual assault allegations against actor Armie Hammer are “under review” by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office, CNN reported Monday, roughly two years after several women came forward with claims of abuse, including cannibalism.
Key Facts
The complainant in the case was not revealed, but Hammer has been under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department since February 2021, when a woman named Effie Angelova accused him of raping her in 2017.
After a nine-month investigation, the LAPD wrapped up the case in December 2021 without pressing charges.
Forbes has reached out to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.
First reporting the sexual assault through anonymous screenshots on an Instagram account called @houseofeffie, Effie revealed texts allegedly from Hammer describing rape fantasies and admitting he was “100% a cannibal.”
Following Effie’s claims, two of Hammer’s other exes reported abuse, with Courtney Vucekovich telling Page Six their relationship was emotionally abusive and Paige Lorenze saying Hammer branded her, took graphic photos without consent and sexually coerced her.
Key Background
When she pressed charges, Effie said she had a four-year relationship with Hammer starting in 2016 when she was 20, while he was 31 and married to television personality Elizabeth Chambers, whom he divorced months after the alleged rape. The rape, which Effie said occurred in April 2020 at the end of their relationship, lasted four hours and made her fear for her life.
Contra
The Call Me By Your Name star spoke publicly for the first time in February in a tell-all story in online newsletter Air Mail. He told the publication he was sexually assaulted by a youth pastor when he was 13, drawing him to intense, BDSM-filled sexual relationships for the rest of his life. Although he denied wrongdoing, he did tell Air Mail the “power dynamics were off” in his relationship with Effie because of the age gap and the fact he was a successful and wealthy actor. Since Effie’s allegations came out, Hammer has chosen to leave or been dropped from a number of film projects, including Shotgun Wedding, The Offer and The Million Dollar Spy, and has said he is “broke” and “massively in debt.”
