Bad actors have reportedly made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen non-fungible tokens (NFTs) after exploiting the Discord servers of two prominent NFT communities.
According to an investigation from blockchain security firm PeckShield, 32 NFTs worth about $259,000 were stolen after scammers compromised the Discord servers of the Bored Ape Yacht Club and OtherSide metaverse communities.
PeckShield shared an image posted by pseudonymous on-chain analyst OkHotshot showing that the bad actors breached the account of Yuga Labs community and social manager Boris Vagner to execute a phishing scheme which had community members unwittingly send 145 Ethereum (ETH) worth of NFTs to a phony wallet.
The scammers posted a message that contained a phishing link on the group’s Discord server using Vagner’s verified account. The message offered an NFT giveaway to entice victims into clicking the URL.
According to PeckShield, among the valuable NFTs that were stolen include Mutant Ape Yacht Club numbers 4439 and 3197. Bored Ape Yacht Club number 3215 and Bored Ape Kennel Club number 4945 were also taken.
As for Otherdeed, the NFT project that allows users to claim land in Yuga Labs’ metaverse Otherside, the actors ran away with numbers 13781, 52306, 82318, 59851 and 50245.
NFT marketplace OpenSea says that the mentioned assets have been reported for suspicious activity.
