Sammy Guevara and Andrade El Idolo were reportedly involved in a backstage fight ahead of AEW Dynamite stemming from their tense Twitter
In what was supposed to be a celebratory anniversary broadcast of AEW Dynamite, tonight’s broadcast only served to remind fans of how ugly AEW’s backstage environment has become.
Guevara took to Twitter yesterday to lash out at Andrade, who told Mas Lucha (h/t Wrestling Inc) that Sammy Guevara complained backstage that Andrade hit him too hard. Guevara called out Andrade, who is rumored to be frustrated in AEW, telling the former WWE Superstar to “just go back to WWE and [expletive] off.” Guevara also called Andrade a “jobber” and a “favor hire.” Andrade responded by saying he would see Sammy Guevara at AEW Dynamite and confront him to his face.
Despite the obvious danger that lay ahead, and even on the heels of a massive backstage brawl at AEW All Out (which resulted in the reported suspensions of CM Punk and The Young Bucks), AEW President Tony Khan was helpless to stop the inevitable backstage brawl. If Khan’s leadership skills—or lack thereof—were in question before, they’re now in question with an exclamation point at the end.
Tony Khan has simply lost the respect of the AEW locker room and failed to alleviate lingering tensions that have no end in sight.
AEW Dynamite advertised National Scissoring Day featuring new AEW world tag team champions the Acclaimed and the resurgent Billy Gunn. Gunn’s popularity as Daddy Ass has even inspired WWE to batten down the hatches in preparation for potential “Daddy Ass” chants at the Barclays Center during Monday’s D-Generation X reunion.
AEW Dynamite also advertised Rush vs. Hangman Adam Page; MJF vs. Wheeler Yuta, Darby Allin vs. Jay Lethal, Wardlow vs. Brian Cage and a tag team main event pitting Bryan Danielson and Daniel Garcia vs. Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara. Guevara was in the news this week outside of this main event due to his budding backstage feud with Andrade as AEW backstage feuds are becoming as common in pro wrestling as baby oil and lip fillers. Not that there’s anything wrong with either.
Tony Khan went on the defensive while promoting this show’s many first-time matchups that did not have a long-term build.
“That is a trope in wrestling that needs to continue to be a thing,” said Khan.
“You can call it a cold match if you want, but sometimes things start out of new issues. Not everything is going to have weeks or months of build going into it, although a lot of stuff should.”
“There’s been a lot of build to a lot of this stuff. And, if people have been telling me there hasn’t, they’re completely full of sh**, or they’re just not paying attention.”
Last week’s broadcast of AEW Dynamite was up down with 990,000 viewers.

AEW Dynamite Winners and Highlights | October 5, 2022
MJF def. Wheeler Yuta
MJF defeated Wheeler Yuta with a submission, suggesting this feud will be blown off after just one match. Even though Lee Moriarty got involved after, I remain hopeful that MJF will move on to bigger and better things.
With AEW losing one talent after another to backstage brawls, AEW needs MJF more than ever and this man needs to be in more high-profile feuds.
Darby Allin def. Jay Lethal
Jay Lethal and Darby Allin showed good sportsmanship with a handshake at the end, and I had to make sure this match wasn’t being competed for an ROH title.
Darby Allin and Jay Lethal actually had a very good match, but pro wrestling Twitter was knee-deep in Googling this Andrade vs. Sammy Guevara brawl.
Wardlow def. Brian Cage
Brian Cage and Wardlow had a banger of a big-man match. There were points where fans rose to their feet to applaud the athleticism.
The pop FTR received has to be heard to be believed. Tony Khan really does need to book these guys.
Backstage, heel Britt Baker noted Saraya will not be wrestling in AEW, which means she inevitably will be. I remain terrified.
Athena, Willow Nightingale and Toni Storm vs. Jamie Hayter, Penelope Ford and Serena Deeb
Serena Deeb received a massive reaction from her hometown crowd in Washington D.C. as they chanted “Deeb!”
Between Jamie Hayter and Serena Deeb, the babyfaces were in the awkward position of being treated by this crowd like they were the heels. This was never more apparent during the lukewarm tag from Nightingale, who is typically beloved by live crowd.
