Salman Khan’s ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ Earns $14 Million Worldwide

Salman Khan’s latest outing – the Hindi film Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan had a disappointing opening on Friday (April 21) but the collections picked pace over the weekend and it has managed a decent score in the first three days. With a worldwide gross collection of $14 million and India gross collections of nearly $10 million, the film is now the second biggest weekend opener for a Hindi film this year.

Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan made an opening nett collection of $1.9 million in the Indian markets on Friday, toppling Ranbir Kapoor’s Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar as the second biggest opening Hindi film in India for the year 2023. The film is second only to Sidharth Anand’s Pathaan which scored $6.9 million earlier this year.

The collections for Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan saw roughly 92% hike on the second day and rose to $2.9 million in the Indian markets. The gross weekend collections for the film stood at $10 million in India. It has also scored a respectable number on the first working day since release on Monday.

Directed by Farhad Samji, the film earned $929,844 in the US alone in the first weekend of its release. In the US markets too, Khan’s film scored second biggest weekend opener for a Hindi film, after Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan.

Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan is being screened more than 4500 screens across the globe, making it as wide a release as Yash Raj Film’s Pathaan that broke several box office records earlier this year. With a pre-festive release, the film was also able to encash on regular weekend-movie-buffs as well as those stepping into theatres as part of their celebrations.

Over the past two decades, Khan has made it a ritual to release his mega-budget films around the festival of Eid and often gets to capitalise on his fandom combined with festivities. The opening collections for Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan has been among the lowest of Khan’s Eid releases since 2000. The only film that scored less than the latest one came out way back in 2010. Abhinav Kashyap’s Dabangg earned roughly $1.7 million nett in India. Ali Abbas Zafar’s 2019 film Bharat (featuring Katrina Kaif) has been Khan’s best opener till date with $5.3 million nett collections in India alone.

Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan traces the story of an orphan man who is the protector of people around him and does not hesitate in killing dozens when it comes to protecting his adopted family of three brothers. For the sake of his self-acquired responsibility of the brothers, the hero sacrificed the love of his life. When the brothers fall in love, they set up for a woman to lure the hero back to love and marriage.

The film features some major south-Indian stars, perhaps in a desperate bid to include a larger set of audience in an age when Telugu and Kannada films have performed exceptionally well in the Hindi-speaking regions in India. Pooja Hegde has been paired opposite Khan in Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan while Venkatesh Daggubati plays her elder brother. Jagapathi Babu essays the role of the main villain in the film that also stars Bhumika Chawla and Rohini Hattangadi.

The film also has a small tribute to Khan’s first hit – Maine Pyar Kiya. Bhagyashree, who played his heroine in the 1989 film, makes a guest appearance alongwith her real-life son, actor Abhimanyu Dassani and husband Himalaya Dassani. Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan is a treat for the typical Salman Khan fan, but not worth much if you aren’t one.
