Topline
Former President Donald Trump’s ex-lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell surrendered Wednesday to Fulton County authorities, after they were charged in a massive Georgia election interference case—bringing the total number of defendants to turn themselves in before Friday’s deadline to eight, with Trump expected to surrender on Thursday.
Key Facts
Giuliani, who is charged with 13 counts in the case, and Powell, who is charged with seven counts, surrendered Wednesday afternoon, according to Fulton County Jail records; they are expected to be released after posting $150,000 and $100,000 bonds, respectively.
Former Coffee County GOP Chair Cathy Latham, former Georgia State Sen. David Shafer, former Trump lawyer Kenneth Chesebro and Georgia lawyer Ray Smith also surrendered earlier Wednesday.
Bail bondsman Scott Hall was the first co-defendant to surrender Tuesday, followed by former Trump attorney John Eastman.
Both Hall’s and Eastman’s mug shots were made public late Tuesday, hours after they were released by Fulton County Sheriff’s office—a procedure the sheriff is expected to follow for all 19 defendants, including Trump.
Trump said he would surrender Thursday, he wrote Monday on Truth Social after negotiating a $200,000 bond with the Fulton County, District Attorney’s office.
Key Background
The Fulton County District Attorney’s office indicted Trump and 18 others last Monday on 41 total counts, including a racketeering charge for each defendant, accusing them of orchestrating a “criminal enterprise” designed to upend the 2020 presidential election results in the state. The indictment accuses Trump and his accomplices of pressuring public officials to violate their oaths office in order to aid their efforts, scheming to produce fake Electoral College certificates that falsely stated Trump won the state and accessing voting machines in Coffee County. The indictment, which charges Trump with 13 felonies, is his fourth since the Manhattan District Attorney’s office first indicted him in March.
What To Watch For
Fourteen of the 19 defendants in the case have negotiated bond agreements with prosecutors this week, ranging from $10,000 to $200,000.
