Reynolds Lake Oconee Adding Another Nine Holes From Tom Fazio To Create Seventh 18-Hole Course

One of the biggest golf properties in the nation is getting even bigger.

Reynolds Lake Oconee, located midway between Atlanta and Augusta, Georgia, is adding nine more holes of golf to bring its total to 126. The only U.S. golf resort with more at a single property is Pinehurst, which has 171 and will up its total to 189 when it opens its No. 10 course next year.

Reynolds Lake Oconee will open its seventh and newest 18-hole layout in late 2024, although the number of holes open to resort play will actually go down.

The property has had five 18-hole courses (The Landing, Great Waters, The Preserve, The Oconee and the private Creek Club) as well as a 27-hole layout designed by architect Tom Fazio known as The National. Fazio is now returning to Reynolds to build the additional nine that will join his existing “Bluff nine” from The National course to create an entirely new 18-hole layout.

The National will now be comprised of its Ridge and Cove nines, and remain open to public play. The new course, which will be available only for members in the growing community, will use the first five holes of the Bluff routing, followed by the nine new holes, and then connect back to the final four holes of the Bluff nine.

The land for the nine new holes has more than 100 feet of elevation change as it gradually slopes toward a cove on Lake Oconee, incorporating terrain distinguished by a creek, large boulders and an existing pond.

“My goal is always to create distinctive, one-of-a-kind golf courses,” said Fazio. “There’s a lot of terrain variation — lots of ups and downs, ins and outs, twists and turns — which is great for golf. That’s what makes this such a fine natural setting.”

In addition to 36 holes for member play, Reynolds will also have 90 holes available for member and resort guest play, putting it just
just
behind golf destinations like Bandon Dunes (103 holes, with more on the way) and PGA National (99 holes).
