You’ve seen a lot of “best of” lists at this point, but I did find this new list rather interesting. It’s from u/Grubster11, who says they scraped 50,000 comments from every weekly recommendations reddit thread on r/television to come up with a list of the 50 most talked about shows of the year.
This is not necessarily the best shows of 2022, as you can have a hugely debated show that ultimately has mixed reviews (cough, Rings of Power), and this isn’t even new shows, as old shows can be recommended too (The Wire). And of course this is reddit, which skews pretty heavily male. But it’s interesting data all the same.
Here are the top 50 most talked-about shows on reddit over the course of 2022:
- Severance
- House of the Dragon
- Barry
- The Boys
- Better Call Saul
- Andor
- Stranger Things
- Succession
- Breaking Bad
- Rings of Power
- For All Mankind
- The Bear
- The Wire
- Atlanta
- The Americans
- Peacemaker
- The Leftovers
- The White Lotus
- Yellowjackets
- Mr. Robot
- The Great
- Treme
- Yellowstone
- 1883
- Westworld
- Reacher
- Station Eleven
- The Expanse
- Ozark
- Star Trek
- Slow Horses
- The Sandman
- Ted Lasso
- Game of Thrones
- Black Bird
- Raised by Wolves
- The Sopranos
- 1899
- Only Murders in the Building
- Fargo
- Mr. Inbetween
- Euphoria
- Mad Men
- Pachinko
- The Old Man
- Arcane
- Peaky Blinders
- Bad Sisters
- True Detective
- okay it’s the top 49, one’s missing
Anything interesting of note here? I’m not terribly surprised that Severance is number one, given how much there was to process and theorize about that show. Similarly, House of the Dragon seems like the rebirth of weekly Game of Thrones debates, even if the source material tells us where we’re going there. A little surprised to see Barry that high, as it’s a good show, but I though it’s season this year was somewhat uneven. The Boys, Better Call Saul, Stranger Things and Andor are a who’s who of must-watch series this year.
The old shows reddit is still talking about after all this times? A lot of classics people may finally be getting around to. The Wire, The Sopranos, Mad Men, Breaking Bad…Treme? That one kind of threw me.
Reddit also tends to elevate some under-discussed series elsewhere, like Apple’s For All Mankind, The Bear, The Great and Slow Horses. But they also like wider mainstream hits like Yellowstone and 1883. All in all, it’s not so bad as a recommendation list, as there are few shows on here that I’d argue are actively terrible and should be avoided.
