Paris Saint-Germain bid €100 million ($109 million) for FC Barcelona star Pedri a few months ago, according to a report from El Espanol‘s Barca site Culemania.
Culemania can be considered a reliable source for information on all things pertaining to the Catalans, with one of its regular contributors AS‘ Barca correspondent Javi Miguel.
When sharing the report on Twitter, one of its writers Victor Malo explained how sources at Camp Nou said “many signs of interest have arrived for the young pearls of the club” including Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo.
A few months ago, PSG reportedly came forward with a bold €100 million ($109 million) offer for Pedri which barely caused a ripple “because of the absolute lack of interest it generated”.
Barca “completely rejected” the proposal as the number ‘8’ is considered fundamental to the club’s short, medium, and long term future.
Despite their financial difficulties, Barca are in no way tempted by making a huge profit on the Canary Islands native who they paid just €5 million ($5.3 million) to Las Palmas for in 2019.
Pedri has been a mainstay in the first XI since head coach Xavi Hernandez’s predecessor Ronald Koeman gave him a chance to prove his worth in 2020.
In October of the following year, the Spain international signed a long-term contract until 2026 which came with an astronomical €1 billion ($1.094 billion) release clause.
Attaching such a high, PSG-proof sum to the terms – as they have done in fresh deals for Gavi and Araujo – is proof that Barca have learned their lesson from the summer of 2017.
Back then, the Qatari-backed giants tabled the now relatively paltry €222 million ($243 million) required to smash the world transfer record and release Neymar from his obligations, with the Blaugrana powerless as the Brazilian fled to the French capital.
The mentioned young trio currently on Barca’s books are considered “untouchable” at the club, and it is difficult to imagine any of them being let go no matter how high the amount an interested club can stump up.
One thing is for certain, PSG will have to do much better than €100 million to land a generational talent in the mould of Pedri.
