Topline
President Joe Biden has been meeting over the past two days with Robert K. Hur, the Justice Department special counsel investigating how classified documents ended up at the president’s home in Delaware and personal offices in Washington, D.C., according to multiple reports.
Key Facts
The interview, which the White House reportedly described as “voluntary,” took place over Sunday and Monday.
It could signal that Hur is nearing the end of his investigation into classified documents found at Biden’s home, according to the New York Times.
Forbes has reached out to the White House for comment.
Key Background
A Justice Department investigation was launched in November when Biden’s attorneys reported they’d found classified documents in a storage closet in his office at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, a think tank Biden worked at. Other classified papers were subsequently found and reported at his personal home in Wilmington, Delaware. In January, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Hur as special counsel to investigate the situation.
Tangent
This comes as former President Donald Trump also deals with an investigation and legal challenge over allegations he took classified documents from the White House. In June, Trump was indicted on 37 felony counts for those allegations. That indictment alleged Trump refused to return the documents after officials asked for them and attempted to deceive them during their investigations. The indictment included evidence that Trump had allegedly been storing boxes of the documents in restrooms, ball rooms and other areas through the Mar-A-Lago estate that he owns and lives at and alleges that he showed classified documents with an unnamed author, two members of his staff (without proper clearance) and an aide working for his political action committee, according to the indictment. Biden has not been accused of refusing to return the documents that were found in his position at this time. Biden and his team have said that they immediately returned their documents to the National Archives and Records Administration, which they say makes his case different from Trump’s.
