Just in time for Christmas, Primark opened its first store in Brooklyn, NY. Located in City Point, a mixed-used development, the 49,000 square foot selling space is filled with bargain-priced apparel for the whole family.
The apparel is well made and includes such practical, everyday items as women’s cycling shorts ($4), workout leggings ($11), men’s button-down shirts ($10), hoodies ($10), and bras ($4.50). A division of Associated British Foods, the company has branches throughout Europe and is now building a presence in the U.S.
The company is headquartered in London, England and today has 411 stores in 15 countries. Globally, the company has over 132,000 employees. Many of the European stores are larger than the stores in the U.S. management has found that larger stores work in malls, while somewhat smaller units are effective in the U.S.
Primark builds everything around everyday affordability. The vision is to make more sustainable fashion that is affordable for everyone. The company’s management is focused on giving the clothes a longer life, protecting life on the planet, and improving the lives of the people who make the collections. That is why they company has set out to change the way Primark clothes are made. The Primark Cares strategy is a wide-reaching program with a series of goals to achieve by 2030. It includes ensuring clothes will be made from recycled or other sustainable sources and halving carbon emissions throughout the entire supply chain. Also, Primark has made it a priority to pursue a living wage for workers in its supply chain.
Primark has kept its Irish roots. However, today you will find Primark stores established in the U.K. and across the mainland of Europe, with expansion underway into Central and Eastern Europe along with the U.S.
The company sees its stores as the heart of the business. Always thinking ahead, the management has added store sevices such as beauty, food, and beverage bars in order to create a true retail destination. The company promotes itself on social media in order to attract young customers.
Primark’s new location in downtown Brooklyn is the 15th store in the U.S. It has been a slow, cautious expansion so far. Most Americans remain unfamiliar with the Primark name, but management expects a strong performance at the new location once customers become more aware of all that Primark offers.
POSTSCRIPT: I have seen Primark units in Cologne, Duesseldorf, Berlin, and London. They are amazing; they attract large crowds, and the shopping bags that families carry out of the stores are full. Young people hunger for affordable clothing – and Primark understands that and delivers it to them.
