Topline
A Belgian police officer was fatally stabbed in a suspected terror attack in the capital Brussels on Thursday, local outlets reported Thursday, although a suspect and motive have not been disclosed.
Key Facts
The attack took place Thursday night at the Brussels North train station, where two officers were approached by the alleged assailant, according to Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office, the Associated Press reported.
After stabbing the officers, the attacker, who was reportedly in the country illegally, was then shot by other officers responding to the scene, Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws reported.
The two officers were taken to the hospital, where one officer is in the intensive care unit, and the other, believed to be between 25 and 30, has since died of stab wounds to his neck, according to Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad.
A member of the country’s judicial office told the Associated Press there is a “suspicion of a terror attack,” while Het Nieuwsblad reported witnesses heard the man yell, “Allahu Akbar!” before attacking the officers.
This is a developing story.
Key Background
The attack comes six years after Brussels’ airport and a metro station were bombed in a terror attack carried out by people believed to be members of the Islamic State. The suicide bombings, which killed 32 people, followed another attack outside a stadium and several crowded restaurants in Paris ordered by the Islamic State in November 2015, which left 130 dead—the deadliest attack in France since World War II.
