Police Believe Jonathan Majors’ Assault Accuser Attacked Him, Report Says

Topline

Police in New York City now believe a woman who accused actor Jonathan Majors of assault earlier this year attacked Majors herself, the New York Times and Insider reported Thursday, months after Majors was charged with strangulation and assault.

Key Facts

In March, Majors made headlines after his former partner Grace Jabbari accused him of assaulting her during a taxi ride to his home in Manhattan, leading to an arrest—but now police believe there is enough evidence to arrest Jabbari, the Times reported.

The New York Police Department issued an I-card—an internally used marker that indicates there is probable cause to arrest someone but is different from an arrest warrant—for Jabbari last week, the Times and Insider reported.

Jabbari’s lawyer, Brad Edwards, told the Times there was no reason to arrest her and that he had “seen nothing reliable indicating that any agency has developed a different opinion.”

Edwards also reportedly said he understands “the criminal case against Mr. Majors is proceeding as expected.”

Contra

After he was arrested, a representative for Majors told the Associated Press the actor had done “nothing wrong.” Majors’ attorney, Priya Chaudhry, told Forbes her client “has been asking for justice as the victim here, and he serves to have his assailant arrested and brought to court to face the charges against her.”

Key Background

Majors—star of Creed III, HBO’s Lovecraft Country and Marvel films—was arrested in New York on March 25 on charges of strangulation, assault and harassment after a woman called the police and told them she had been assaulted. The woman was reportedly treated for minor head and neck injuries at a local hospital. The victim, Jabbari, was reportedly in a relationship with Majors for several years. Variety reported multiple alleged abuse victims of Majors have come forward and were cooperating with authorities in the weeks after his arrest. Since the reports of the incident, Majors has lost a number of professional opportunities. He was dropped by the talent agency Entertainment 360 and the PR firm The Lede Company, according to Deadline. He’s also lost a few film roles, including the upcoming film adaptation of Walter Mosley’s novel The Man in My Basement, which he was supposed to star in and executive produce, as well as an Otis Redding biopic. The Texas Rangers dropped Majors from their ad campaign and the U.S. Army suspended an advertising campaign the actor narrated.

What To Watch For

A trial date for Majors is set for August 3.
