Apple TV+’s new sci-fi thriller, Pluribus, has arrived, and viewers are already hooked. The mysterious series from the creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul is unlike anything audiences have seen on TV. If you’ve finished the first two episodes, keep reading to find out when the rest will debut on the streamer.
Ahead of its premiere on Nov. 7, the plot details of Pluribus were kept tightly under wraps, with Apple TV+’s synopsis simply stating: “The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.” The release of the first two episodes finally revealed what the sci-fi series is really about.
Episode 1 kicks off in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where scientists detect a mysterious alien signal originating 600 light-years away that contains an RNA sequence for an unknown virus. When a lab accident involving mice exposes the researchers to the pathogen, it triggers a bizarre side effect: the scientists become compelled to kiss each other, spreading the infection through saliva and contaminating their experiments.
After the outbreak spirals out of control, humanity falls under the influence of “the Joining,” an extraterrestrial virus that unites the global population into a peaceful, hive-minded collective. Millions die and only 13 people are immune to its effects, including Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), a fantasy romance novelist. The cast also features Carlos Manuel Vesga, Karolina Wydra, Miriam Shor and Samba Schutte.
The series has been met with strong early acclaim, with Pluribus earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 74 critic reviews and an impressive 84% audience rating following the release of its first two episodes.
In her review, NPR’s correspondent Linda Holmes wrote: “If loneliness turns out to be our legacy, Vince Gilligan’s haunting new show Pluribus might be one of the era’s most relevant works.” Meanwhile, The New York Times’ James Poniewozik described Pluribus as “a wildly fanciful series that feels unsettlingly real at its core.”
