Penn State is hiring VCU coach Mike Rhoades as its new men’s basketball coach, a person with direct knowledge said.
“It’s a done deal,” said the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he’s not authorized to speak for the school or Rhoades.
Rhoades, 50, replaces Micah Shrewsberry, who left Penn State March 22 to succeed Mike Brey at Notre Dame. Shrewsberry led the Nittany Lions to the Big Ten Tournament championship game and the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Texas in the second round.

Rhoades is a Mahanoy City, Pa. native who attended Lebanon Valley College (PA).
He went 129-61 in five seasons at VCU, with three NCAA Tournament appearances. This year’s VCU team won the Atlantic 10 Tournament and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Saint Mary’s. They finished 27-8, 15-3 in the A-10.
For his career, he is 373-189 including stints at Rice and Division 3 Randolph Macon.
Meantime, VCU is targeting Utah State’s Ryan Odom to replace Rhoades, as first reported by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
