Already a father of one, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II welcomed Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III to the world on Nov. 28, 2022.
“It’s awesome to bring in a son to add to my family,” he said
The baby boy, who weighed in at seven pounds, eight ounces, also arrived at an opportune time.
He was born Monday night, and the Chiefs had Tuesday off before returning to practice on Wednesday.
The Chiefs have a huge AFC Championship Game rematch against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, but Mahomes II’s new baby shouldn’t impact the quarterback’s preparation for that upcoming tilt.
“He stays pretty focused on the job at hand. He’s got a great wife that gets all that,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “‘Bronze’ is in good hands.”
That nickname is quite appropriate. Mahomes II’s oldest child, who was born on February 20, 2021, is named Sterling Skye Mahomes, and he and wife, Brittany, own a pair of dogs named Steel and Silver.
Since he was five or six years old, Mahomes II had the idea of giving a son the family name of Patrick Mahomes III, so that he could nickname him “Tre.” But his brother, Jackson, recently suggested the nickname of “Bronze” because it fits perfectly with Sterling, Steel and Silver.
“‘Bronze,’” Reid said, “I love it.”
Mahomes III will be able to buy any precious metals he wants.
His father has ensured the family will have generational wealth.
Mahomes II is the highest-paid player in the NFL. His 10-year, $450 million contract, which doesn’t expire until after the 2031 season, is the most lucrative in terms of both total value and contract length. In addition, he has a slew of endorsements, including Adidas, Coors Light, Oakley, Head & Shoulders, State Farm, Bose, Electronic Arts
Those riches are deserved. Mahomes II already owns a Super Bowl MVP and a regular-season MVP and may be well on his way to another regular-season award.
Mahomes II leads the NFL in passing yards (3,585) and touchdowns (29) and is in the midst of a torrid stretch. He is the third quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 320 yards in six straight games.
Mahomes III may not only inherit those transcendent athletic genes from his father, but his mother, Brittany, also played collegiate soccer at the University of Texas at Tyler and professionally for UMF Afturelding/Fram in Iceland.
The athletic lineage extends to the patriarch of the family, Patrick Lavon Mahomes Sr., who had an 11-year Major League Baseball career with the Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs.
Along with a lot of family, including Mahomes II’s maternal grandparents, Mahomes Sr. was on had for the birth of “Bronze.”
“He was emotional for sure,” Mahomes II said. “My dad, as he gotten older, has gotten a little bit more emotional — as we all do.”
Perhaps the former pitcher was beaming over the next great NFL passer.
Reid joked that was the talk of the players in the Chiefs locker room.
“If they play long enough,” Reid said, “we’ll have another quarterback here.”
