Paris Saint-Germain Ready To Pay FC Barcelona Star’s Release Clause

Paris Saint-Germain are ready to pay the release clause of one of FC Barcelona’s biggest stars amid possibly losing Kylian Mbappe this summer according to El Nacional.

In similar circumstances seen previously with France teammate Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele appeared set to leave Barca on a free transfer in 2022 when the five-year contract he signed upon joining from Borussia Dortmund was nearing expiry.

Dembele was linked to various potential suitors including Chelsea and PSG, who seemed as though they would lose Mbappe to Barca’s bitter rivals Real Madrid at the time. In the end, however, both young men stayed put at their current clubs by signing renewals until 2024.

Mbappe has told PSG he wishes to leave in June next year when his terms are once again expiring, and communicated this in an official document he sent to the Qatari-backed giants on Monday as reported by L’Equipe.

As for Dembele, Barca and his camp are currently in renewal talks after the Catalans offered him the chance to commit his future to the La Liga champions until 2027 in May, according to SPORT.

In the French capital, though, PSG are reportedly ready to activate Dembele’s paltry €50 million ($54.3 million) release clause – with half heading directly to the 26-year-old and his agent – which eliminates the need to negotiate the potential transfer with Barca president Joan Laporta.

Losing Dembele in this manner to this club would be history repeating itself. In 2017, PSG smashed the world transfer record to purchase then-Blaugrana star Neymar by paying the required €222 million ($241 million) to get him out of his contract.

Dembele was subsequently bought from Dortmund for €105 million ($114 million) plus add-ons as a like-for-like replacement for the Brazilian.

Though struggling through many injury-laden seasons, Dembele has now finally put together regular form and become one of head coach Xavi Hernandez’s most trusted stars meaning that losing him to a continental rival such as the Ligue 1 outfit would be a major setback.

PSG allegedly want Dembele if Mbappe stays or not, and renewed interest from the club where he could be one of two mains star now Messi has left and Neymar will probably follow might turn his head.
