Jordan Love outdueled his mentor Sunday night, leading the Green Bay Packers past Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, 35-25.
Now, Love has entered the MVP race — an award Rodgers won four times as a Packer.
Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes is a heavy favorite at +135 at FanDuel sportsbook. But Love now has the fifth-best odds at +1600 after a terrific showing against the Steelers.
Love completed 29-of-37 passes for 360 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and posted a whopping 134.2 passer rating against Pittsburgh. Love also completed 20 straight passes in that game, which tied the franchise record set by Brett Favre in 2007.
“He’s showed he’s the successor,” Packers defensive end Micah Parsons said of Love. “He’s the up and coming. Like J-Love, talking about when I was coming here, I was like, ‘I know they’ve got a quarterback, I know I’ve got a quarterback.’
“I’m just so proud of him, everything he’s been through, how he’s developed as a player, how he’s developed as a person, and he’s just playing some really good football right now, and I’m glad I’m here to watch it. I’m glad I’m on this side. So J-Love, keep going.”
Buffalo’s Josh Allen currently has the second-best MVP odds at FanDuel at +380, while New England’s Drake Maye (+420), Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams (+1400) and Love round out the top five.
Mahomes is also the favorite at DraftKings at +125, while Love has the ninth-best odds at +2200.
Love, now in his sixth year and third as the starter, is in the middle of his best NFL season.
Love’s passer rating of 112.8 ranks fourth in the league and his completion percentage of 70.9 also ranks fourth.
Love is ninth in passing yards (1,798) and tied for 11th in touchdown passes (13). Love has also thrown the second-fewest interceptions (two) among quarterbacks that have made every start, trailing only Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts (one).
In addition, Love has led the Packers to the NFC’s best record (5-1-1) as the midway point of the season nears.
“Jordan’s worked his ass off to get here,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “It’s been cool – and I’ve said this many times – just to watch how he’s matured as a young guy coming in here at 21 years old. He’s a grown-ass man now.
“You see it, what he does, how he carries himself. He’s just so confident. He’s a great teammate, he encourages the other guys, he’s a hell of a leader and he’s really grown as a football player.”
