Wednesday can prove a decisive day in the trajectory of Ousmane Dembele with the ultimatum that FC Barcelona gave his representative Moussa Sissoko expiring before an important meeting.
The World Cup winner’s camp must respond to the Blaugrana’s final offer amid exorbitant demands that were made by the former party, and the board will also meet with head coach Xavi Hernandez to decide which action it should take with the 24-year-old.
While president Joan Laporta supports making him watch the rest of the season from the stands as was seen with Ilaix Moriba in 2021/2022, Xavi continues to count on the winger but is “awaiting a joint decision” according to Mundo Deportivo.
Demanding a “crazy” salary of $34mn gross for his client, Sissoko continues to make noise in the press and yesterday told French radio station RMC that Barca are threatening them.
“We are not here to feed debates on social media but the truth must be told. Yes, we have demanding requirements, but we have already shown that Ousmane’s career options were not dictated by money, otherwise he would not be here,” said Sissoko.
“So, if Barcelona had wanted to negotiate, they could have tried to sit down at the table with us to discuss. Except that there is no discussion and only threats not to play in their team anymore. And that is prohibited. We will assert Ousmane Dembele’s rights if necessary.
“It’s a pressure move that doesn’t work with people like us. Perhaps it can work with agents who have friends with Barcelona. This isn’t my case, I’m here to defend the interests of my player,” Sissoko insisted.
“We don’t know what we are going to do, nothing has been done,” Sissoko claimed. “But the hierarchy are only losing Ousmane. From the beginning we showed that we wanted to discuss, with clear conditions, but without closing the door.”
Sissoko is believed not to have accepted Barca’s offer, but has not rejected it either. Amid interest from newly-moneyed Newcastle United and Manchester United, there are reports that Dembele has already signed with another club.
In that case, Barca would then try and offload him in the current transfer window, but it seems unlikely the ‘Mosquito’ signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for $153mn would accept that.
