Ousmane Dembele has two offers from the Premier
The Frenchman is in his best form for the Catalans since joining in 2017 from Borussia Dortmund in a transfer said to be worth €105mn ($114.3mn) plus add ons.
On Wednesday evening, he scored the only goal of the game as Xavi Hernandez’s men beat Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey and booked their place in the semi-finals.
This improved the Frenchman’s numbers to eight goals and seven assists in 2022/2023. Yet according to El Nacional, this season could be Dembele’s last at Camp Nou if two waiting outfits from the Premier League make their move.
Dembele seemed certain to be on his way out of Catalonia this time last year when he refused to sign a contract extension and some wished to see him sent to the stands until his terms expired on June 30.
After Xavi took him under his wing, however, and exacted top displays from the 26-year-old, he put pen to paper on a new deal that will expire in 2024.
This means that the coming summer could be the last that Barca have to cash in on Dembele, with his measly and quite simply ridiculously low €50mn ($54.4mn) release clause pocket change for the two clubs from England – Liverpool and Newcastle United – that are allegedly interested in snatching him away.
Both parties could pay Dembele much more than he currently takes home in Blaugrana too. And as is the case with getting Gavi and Ronald Araujo’s contracts registered with La Liga, securing Dembele on a long-term deal also has to take top priority over all else leading up to 2023/2024.
This includes making new signings. Though Barca could do with more support and competition on the wings for Dembele, as well as a back up striker for Robert Lewandowski and perhaps another midfielder, the club must make their current high-performing stars happy and make them feel special.
If not, it can’t come as any surprise that their agents might push them into having their heads turned elsewhere.
