Sedona Prince (she/they) been with the Oregon Ducks Women’s Basketball Team on the rise for the last three seasons. That said, Prince is likely most known for their viral TikTok video that led to sweeping changes towards equity in NCAA basketball.
In the video, Prince debunks the NCAA’s claims that the lack of space was the reason women were given one rack of free weights for all teams competing in the 2021 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Prince ends her video by saying, “If you aren’t upset about this problem, then you are apart of it,” into the camera.
Since, Sedona Prince has been tabbed an athlete activist by many. In a world that often tells us speaking up too loudly while being from any “marginalized” group will negatively impact our social standing, Prince is taking her TikTok straight to the boardroom.
Today, Riff, maker of Riff Energy+, the nation’s very first certified carbon neutral energy drink, announced Price as their Chief Community Officer and equity partner. Prince will participate in the company’s incentive equity program.
The partnership is Price’s first equity deal, per the press release. I followed up to ask about the compensation package and received the following response from Riff:
“Sedona’s compensation is a combination of cash and equity.
Equity: Sedona participates in Riff’s incentive equity program.
Cash: Sedona’s paid annually for content creation.
“She’s also paid a minimum amount each month, and in addition she gets a share of the revenue that she generates by sending followers to Riff’s online store. Sedona will also participate in a(n) entrepreneurial mentorship program that Riff is building.”
Neither the monthly minimum nor the revenue share model was disclosed.
Riff is a company that supports smallholder coffee farmers, who produce 80% of the world’s coffee, yet are not paid equitably. The company also promotes upcycling with the goal of reducing the coffee industries greenhouse gas emissions from the decomposition of cascara.
“I’ve always been a big advocate for equity as a key element of sustainability.” said Prince, “So when I first met Paul and learned about what Riff was doing to clean up coffee’s environmental mess, and help empower small farmers who have for too long been exploited, it immediately felt like a fit for me.”
The company is located in Bend, Oregon, located about 130 miles east of the Oregon campus in Eugene, Oregon. Riff products can be found in local stores much close to campus as well as online.
Prince, who transferred from Texas in 2019-20, will enter the upcoming NCAA season as a redshirt junior for Kelly Graves and the Oregon Ducks. The Ducks were eliminated in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament after falling to Belmont 73-70 in double overtime.
