Some clubs were projected to come out of the gates hot and jump-start a Super Bowl run but have thus far failed to live up to those lofty expectations.
Teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals were all great bets to make the playoffs last year, but none of these organizations has more than a single tally in the win column right now.
Other organizations that weren’t considered realistic postseason contenders going into the 2022 season have looked dangerous through the first three weeks.
The Miami Dolphins were expected to be well behind the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East, but they are now one of just two undefeated squads remaining in the league.
The Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants are also one game above .500 right now, an impressive mark given their preseason projections.
While it’s not time to fill out a playoff bracket in pen—there is still plenty of time for these surging squads to fall off and the slumping ones to turn things around—a full month of trends can be rather revealing.
Only six teams since the 1979 playoff expansion have started 0-3 and gone on to reach the playoffs, a particularly concerning trend for the Raiders as the only team without at least a tie ahead of Week 4.
Conversely, the Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles should feel good about their chances of making the postseason. Since the merger, 75 percent of teams to start a season with three consecutive wins have clinched a playoff berth that year.
The rest of the league currently falls somewhere in between, with each week representing another opportunity to better their record and work towards locking up a playoff appearance.
Week 4 may still be early in the year, but the outcome of these games could ultimately make the difference between competing for a Lombardi Trophy and watching from home come January.
Those looking for predictions for the upcoming slate should check back later in the week to find winning betting predictions for Week 4’s primetime and marquee contests.
