OpenAI’s co-founder leaves competitor company, Anthropic

John Schulman has left his position at Anthropic. He was the co-founder of OpenAI and joined the company’s competitor, Anthropic, last summer.

According to a Bloomberg report, AI researcher John Schulman has submitted a resignation. He left OpenAI in August last year to join Anthropic after the development of ChatGPT was completed. John Schulman has not commented on his departure from Anthropic yet.

The head of Science at Anthropic, Jared Kaplan, said, “We are sad to see John go, but we fully support his decision to pursue new opportunities and wish him all the very best.”

Schulman left OpenAI after serving for nearly nine years. He left the company a day after Elon Musk filed a legal case against it.

Ilya Sutskever and Trevor Blackwell (two of OpenAI’s founding members) also work at other companies now. Another Open AI co-founder, Durk Kingma, left the company in 2018 to join Google’s Deepmind and later joined Anthropic in October 2024.
