Olympique Lyonnais Defeats Bordeaux And Stays On Top Of French D1 Arkéma

For this first meeting of the season at home, Olympique Lyonnais (OL) was able to count on Dumornay, Diani, and Hegerberg to score their first goals of the 2023/2024 season and secure a third win.

After a busy month of September, in which OL faced PSG twice and the players joined their national teams for the international break, Bompastor had chosen to rotate her squad with six changes in the starting lineup compared to PSG’s win the week before.

Laura Benkarth made her debut with OL, Majri, and Marozsan started, Bacha and Eugénie Le Sommer were rested, while Vanessa Gilles and Lindsey Horan weren’t even in the match’s squad as they were given a rest.

Of course, the highlight in Lyon’s squad was the long-waited-for return of Griedge Mbock in the back four alongside her captain, Wendie Renard, Elie Carpenter, and Perle Morroni.

Two Recruits, Two Goals In Two Minutes

After failing to score in the first 20 minutes, Lyon was finally able to break through the Bordeaux defense. Damaris sees her ball deflected onto the bar by Lerond, but Dumornay was on the lookout just behind to take the ball back at the far post with a powerful strike (25th). The Haitian international scored her first goal with Lyon in D1 Arkéma.

Lyon quickly doubled the lead following a corner taken by Dzsenifer Marozsán successfully converted into a goal by Kadidiatou Diani (26th). Another first! This goal was also the French striker’s first goal under her new Lyon colors.

Hegerberg Doesn’t Change Habits

In recent months, whenever the Norwegian striker was injured, she made sure to score on every comeback she made.

And for her first match of the new season, she kept the legacy alive. The Norwegian center forward took advantage of Vicky Becho’s good work on the flank to score Lyon’s third goal, between Lerond’s legs.

Lyon is co-leading the French First Division (D1 Arkéma), with Paris FC with 9 points and a +9 goal difference.

Match Highlights

Minute 25: Damaris Egurrola’s long-range shot was deflected by the Bordeaux goalkeeper Justine Lerond into the crossbar. Melchie Dumornay was in the right place at the right time, took the rebound, and netted the ball home.

Minute 26: Kadidiatou Diani, another OL summer signing, scored her first goal following Dzsenifer Marozsan’s corner.

Minute 30: Kadidiatou Diani was close to scoring her double but her shot was slightly off target.

Minute 36: Perle Morroni hits the crossbar after an attempted cross-shot.

Minute 38: Melchie Dumornay was also inches away from scoring her second of the evening after her shot ended in the side net, following a nice build-up play by the Lyonnaises.

Minute 45: The Lyon captain, Wendie Renard, considered as one of the best defenders of all time, tried her luck, but her header was off-target.

Minute 45+2: We could have witnessed one of this season’s best goals, as Dzsenifer Marozsan put on an acrobatic volley but unluckily missed the target.

Minute 55: We needed to wait until the second period to witness the visitors’ first attempt. On loan from OL, Nesrine Bahlouli attempted to threaten Laura Benkarth’s net but her shot was off-target.

Minute 66: Lyon’s all-time best scorer, Eugénie Le Sommer, who started on the bench, was eager to put her name on the scoresheet but couldn’t find the back of the net with her shot.

Minute 77: The first Ballon d’Or winner, the Norwegian Ada Hegerberg, made her first appearance this season with Lyon following her injury recovery, and of course, scored 5 minutes into her match. Something Hegerberg loves! She scored on her return match.

Minute 85: From the penalty spot, Wendie Renard concluded Lyon’s goals festival, netting her second goal of the season.
