Fans have been waiting years for Olivia Rodrigo to announce a new era. The singer-songwriter dropped her most recent album Guts in September 2023, meaning it’s been just over two years since her last full-length. Since then, the pop and rock superstar has been promoting the set with a slew of hit singles and a massive global tour, which ended only recently.
While the singer has teased that she’s back in the studio working on new material, no official announcements have been made yet — and yet, Rodrigo still manages to surprise everyone by scoring a brand new No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom this week.
Olivia Rodrigo and Robert Smith’s “Friday I’m in Love” Debuts at No. 1
Rodrigo’s newly-released duet version of the ’90s classic “Friday I’m in Love” debuts at No. 1 on the Official Physical Singles chart. The list measures the bestselling songs sold on any physical format, such as vinyl, CD, or cassette. This rendition also credits Robert Smith, frontman of the band The Cure, which made the tune successful decades ago, and both artists score wins this frame across the Atlantic.
Olivia Rodrigo Collects Her Third No. 1 Bestseller
“Friday I’m in Love” marks Rodrigo’s third No. 1 on the Official Physical Singles chart. It’s also her sixth top 10 on the tally, as each tune she’s pushed onto the list of the bestselling physical tracks in the nation has become a top 10 success.
Rodrigo has previously conquered the roster with “Vampire,” which spent two weeks at No. 1, as well as her cover of Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season.”
How Olivia Rodrigo Came Close to No. 1… But Missed
The Grammy winner came close to another champion on the Official Physical Singles chart with Guts: The Secret Tracks, an EP that missed out on the summit by just one space. Fellow smashes like “Can’t Catch Me Now,” “Bad Idea Right?,” and “Drivers License” peaked at Nos. 4, 5, and 10, respectively.
“Friday I’m in Love” Finds Success on Multiple Charts
“Friday I’m in Love” also becomes a top 10 bestseller on the Official Singles Sales chart, which combines both physical and digital purchases in the U.K. On that ranking, the collaborative take on the smash opens at No. 5. Rodrigo earns her eighth top 10 on that list, a roundup that includes a trio of No. 1s, as “Drivers License,” “Vampire,” and “Stick Season” all took turns running the show.
Olivia Rodrigo and Robert Smith Recreate a Classic Live
This summer, Rodrigo served as one of the headliners at the Glastonbury Music Festival in the U.K. – a career-defining honor. During her set, she brought out Smith as a surprise guest, and they performed “Friday I’m in Love” for the massive crowd. The collaboration quickly went viral, and fans demanded the ability to purchase and stream the tune. Now, it’s become not just a strong seller, but a No. 1.
Rodrigo recently released two tracks recorded during her Glastonbury set. In addition to “Friday I’m in Love,” a cover of “Just Like Heaven,” another Cure favorite, was shared at the same time. Both credit Smith, and a portion of the proceeds from these versions of the tunes will benefit Doctors Without Borders.
The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love” Returns to the Spotlight
The Cure released “Friday I’m in Love” in 1992. The track served as a single from the band’s album Wish, and it ended up becoming one of the group’s most successful tunes all around the world and a defining smash from the early ‘90s. “Friday I’m in Love” peaked at No. 6 on the Official Singles chart, and decades later, the Rodrigo/Smith collaborative take returns it to the spotlight.
Olivia Rodrigo “Vampire” Is Still a Bestseller
As “Friday I’m in Love” gets off to a fantastic start, Rodrigo only claims one other hit song in the U.K. at the moment. “Vampire” continues to live on the Official Physical Singles chart more than two years after it debuted. This time around, the bloodsucking cut climbs two spaces to No. 26.
Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour and Guts Continue to Perform Well
Rodrigo claims just as many successful albums as songs in the U.K., as both of her full-lengths Sour and Guts continue to appear across a number of Official Charts Company–published tallies. Sour, her introductory set, sits inside the top 40 on both the Official Albums and Official Albums Streaming charts. Guts ranks just barely above its predecessor on both of those lists and also manages to carve out space in the lower rungs on the Official Album Sales and Official Physical Albums rankings.
