The Green Bay Packers doubled up at wide receiver in the 2022 NFL Draft, but it appears they do not believe they have enough at the position.
With Davante Adams traded to the Las Vegas Raiders, the Packers took the first steps in attempting to fill the sizeable void he left by selecting North Dakota State’s Christian Watson in the second round and Nevada’s Romeo Doubs in the fourth round.
But betting on day two and day three picks to immediately deliver with the Packers under pressure to win another championship in the final years of Aaron Rodgers’ glittering career is a risky proposition to make.
The Packers seem to understand that, with NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reporting on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ that they are going to be “involved” for Jarvis Landry, Julio Jones, and Odell Beckham Jr.
There are doubts surrounding each of that trio. Landry and Jones are both coming off the worst season of their careers in terms of production and, while Beckham thrived for the Los Angeles Rams down the stretch of their Super Bowl-winning campaign, his time to prepare for 2022 will be limited after he tore his ACL in Super Bowl LVI.
Yet, of the three, Beckham is one who is anywhere close to Adams as a route-runner, demonstrating his ability to create separation from defenders consistently at key points during Los Angeles’ postseason surge.
Beckham developed an outstanding rapport with Matthew Stafford that came to the fore when it mattered most for Los Angeles as he caught five touchdowns in the regular season and two in the postseason.
Of course, with the Rams, Beckham had the advantage of playing on the same offense as Cooper Kupp, who attracted considerable attention from defenses throughout his receiving triple crown-winning season.
Beckham would not have that same luxury in Green Bay, however, he would be familiar with a system that is akin to the offense in which he played during his time with the Rams.
Additionally, he would also have the substantial benefit of playing with Rodgers, perhaps the modern-day quarterback most renowned for elevating those around him. Even without the prospective addition of Beckham, Rodgers would be favored to put the Packers in position to win the NFC North once again.
In a scenario where the Packers do sign Beckham, they could slow-play his recovery, enabling Rodgers to keep them afloat in the race for the playoff positioning and build an understanding with their younger receivers in the meantime.
A fully healthy Beckham joining a group of receivers that have developed their own connection with Rodgers would give defenses even more reason to fear the Packers’ passing game.
His arrival would likely not put the Packers’ offense on the same level on which it existed during Adams’ time with the team but, with Green Bay making significant additions to the defense, it may not need to be.
Rodgers should have no problem elevating the Packers’ younger receivers to the point where they will contend this year despite the loss of Adams. What Green Bay could use is a veteran to make the difference in the most critical moments. Of the three high-profile receivers still on the market, Beckham is the one who best fits that description.
