NFL Week 4 Best Bets
Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints
The NFL International Series will make its 2022 debut with a Week 4 clash between the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be the venue for this exciting matchup, which kicks off at 9:30 a.m. ET to provide fans and bettors alike with a full day of football action.
Oddsmakers have installed the Vikings as slight favorites in this neutral territory battle. Historically, favorites have done very well when making a trip across the pond.
Discounting the Jacksonville Jaguars—who have made a record eight appearances in London since 2013 and have another scheduled this year as they attempt to build a fanbase in the area—favorites have an almost perfect 9-0-1 straight-up and 7-3 against the spread record in London.
The Vikings may not have a great ATS record in 2022—they’ve gone just 1-2 ATS while posting a 2-1 SU record—but they have fared better than their upcoming opponent. The Saints are one of just three teams without a cover this season while going 1-2 SU.
Although this won’t be a contrarian play (80 percent of tickets and 91 percent of the handle are on Minnesota to cover), this is absolutely not the spot to fade the public.
New Orleans quarterback Jameis Winston has done poorly in games with a spread of a field goal or less on either side. He’s failed to cover twice in those situations this year, bringing his lifetime record to a concerning 13-23-3 ATS in projected close games.
Factor in potential absences from Saints stars Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry, as well as the return of key Minnesota defender Harris Smith, and you have the recipe for a convincing Vikings victory and cover in London.
Pick: Vikings -3
Prediction: Vikings 24 – Saints 17
New England Patriots vs. Green Bay Packers
The New England Patriots are heading into Week 4 without their starting quarterback. After word spread that Brian Hoyer will likely start with Mac Jones sidelined due to an ankle injury, the line on this game moved dramatically.
After going up on the board with the Green Bay Packers laying six, the home team is now favored by 10 at most shops.
Despite the public hammering the Packers—over 58 percent of tickets are on the home side—all signs point to the Patriots keeping this one within double digits. Even after the Pats came out of the gate with an 0-2-1 against the spread record and lost their starting signal-caller, sharp bettors aren’t shying away from New England here. 63 percent of the handle is backing the visitors and it’s for good reason.
Since Belichick took the reins in 2000, New England has gone 30-17-2 against the spread as an underdog. In those 22 years, the Pats have only been an underdog of a touchdown or more eight times and the team has covered those large spreads on six occasions. New England even outright won three of those matchups.
Hoyer is no slouch either. While he’s not much more than a competent backup at this late stage of his career, he’s able to manage games well enough to keep New England competitive against strong foes like the Packers.
Shrewd bettors have been going against the grain by backing Hoyer and cashing tickets for years. In the 11 career games that the 36-year-old has started in which his team is an underdog of at least five points, Hoyer has gone 8-3 against the spread.
Don’t shy away from the Patriots in this situation. They’ve long fed off being disrespected and will dig during their trip to Lambeau Field in Week 4, keeping the final score quite close if not outright winning as they rally behind their backup quarterback.
Pick: Patriots +10
Prediction: Packers 21 – Patriots 18
