NYPD Identifies ‘Person Of Interest’ In Subway Shooting

Topline

The New York Police Department has identified a 62-year-old man whom they believe rented a U-Haul van tied to a shooting at a subway station in Brooklyn earlier Tuesday, as an investigation continues into the incident that injured almost two dozen people.

Key Facts

Police late Tuesday released photos of a “person of interest” named Frank James, and NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said the 62-year-old–who has addresses in Philadelphia and Wisconsin—appeared to rent a U-Haul van found in Brooklyn whose key was discovered at the crime scene.

Essig didn’t specify whether James is related to the shooting, but he said authorities are trying to find James to “determine his connection to the subway shooting, if any.”

The shooter fled the subway station Tuesday morning, and “detectives are actively trying to determine his whereabouts,” Essig added.

Key Background

An unknown shooter released two smoke grenades and fired a handgun dozens of times at a subway station in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood Tuesday morning, Essig and New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a press conference. At least 10 people were shot and another 13 were injured due to smoke inhalation or while fleeing the chaotic scene, Sewell said, though none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening. In addition to the U-Haul key, police found a 9 millimeter Glock handgun, three extended magazines, several smoke grenades and a hatchet, according to Essig.

What We Don’t Know

Sewell said the shooter’s motivation remains unclear, but “clearly this individual boarded the train and was intent on violence.”
