Human rights advocates and organizations in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus were awarded the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday, praising their efforts to speak out against power and protect fundamental rights as Russia, with the support of Belarus, continues to wage war in Ukraine.

The 2022 Peace Prize was jointly awarded to Belarusian rights advocate Ales Bialiatski, Russian human rights organization Memorial and Ukrainian human rights organization Center for Civil Liberties, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Berit Reiss-Andersen announced in Oslo.

The laureates have promoted the right to criticize power and protect fundamental rights of citizens for years and “demonstrate the significance of civil society for peace and democracy,” the committee said.

The awardees were also praised for their efforts to document “war crimes, human rights abuses and the abuse of power.”
