La Liga president Javier Tebas has warned FC Barcelona and Real Madrid that the proposed breakaway Super League will fail to get off the ground.
Plans for the tournament were launched in the Spring of 2021, but fell apart once the fans of the English clubs involved protested against its inception which would have threatened the future of the Champions League and domestic championships such as the Premier
La Liga’s two biggest clubs – FC Barcelona and Real Madrid – have attempted to keep the Super League alive with Italian giants Juventus. In recent days, Barca president Joan Laporta warned that it could become a reality by 2025, which his La Liga counterpart Javier Tebas shot down when speaking from a Global Players presentation on Monday.
“There will be no Super League in 2025,” Tebas warned. “The European Union has already stated that it wants to maintain the current model in Europe, although some nuances may change. An organization will not be created in the hands of the richest”.
“Laporta must study more how pay television works, because it is an important part of his income,” Tebas went on, in relation to how La Liga viewership figures have dropped and Laporta’s comments on the matter.
Speaking to Cadena SER, Tebas recommended that Tebas “focus more on getting back the one-and-a-half million paying subscribers which televised football has lost, and spend less time belittling clubs like Barca.”
“Laporta and [Real Madrid president] Florentino [Perez] are wrong,” Tebas insisted. “Telefonica’s basic package was modified and that meant that the four-odd million that paid for it went [down] to two and a half million subscribers. You have to know what is happening in the foreign market, both La Liga and the Premier have fallen in China while in Mexico we have grown.
“In general terms we have grown more in audiovisual rights than the Premier [League]. Let Laporta worry about managing his budget well, which is more than many Premier League teams,” Tebas scoffed.
In September 2022, Barca’s board approved a budget of €1.255bn ($1.33bn) for the ongoing 2022/2023 season with a profit forecast of €274mn ($274mn).
